BnB Chalet Gafri – Where guests become friends
Vacations make precious memories which last for a lifetime. Our visit to Switzerland in June 2016 was a memorable stay thanks to the gracious hosts – Gabi and Fritz of BnB Chalet Gafri. We stayed for 4-days in this quaint chalet at Wilderswil at the foothills of Swiss mountains, just a step away from popular promenade of Interlaken. Gabi and Fritz are the most gracious hosts we have ever met. We almost felt as their house-guests due to personal attention of our warm host-couple. As Fritz likes to put in his own words – ‘Chalet Gafri is place where guests become friends.’
The chalet stands in the pretty village of Wilderswil, 3 km from Interlaken. It is located in a quiet and idyllic area with a view of the mountains Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and a stream flowing nearby. It is about 5 minutes walk (300 meters) to the Wilderswil-Dorf bus-stop. Also it is just 12 minutes (1.3 kms) to Wilderswil railway-station which connects to Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen. Hence, it provides a base for travelers who seek solace in the quiet of mountains. Especially for hikers, it is perfect base who can get into the mountains within few minutes of hiking into the woods. However, elders can have a bit of tough-time walking the distance to railway station. Hence, for families with elders or disabled members, we recommend having a car if you wish to stay at the Chalet.
Wilderswil is a quintessential Swiss village at the entrance to the magnificent mountain world of the Jungfrau-Region. It is conveniently located just 3 kms away from Interlaken town but still away from urban clutter. The town has 16 hotels, motels and hotels with 900 guest beds, 300 vacation homes. There are also some of very good restaurants in Wilderswil such as Jungfrau Restaurant and Luna Piccante.
From Wilderswil, one can take a rack-railroad up to the Schynige Platte since it opened in 1893. At the top, along with the Hotel Kulm and an excellent alpine garden with 600 species of flowers. Also, sightseers find one of the finest panoramic views of the Alps, encompassing the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks as well as Lake Thun and Wilderswil.
Our room and service
BnB chalet Gafri is made of local wood in a typical Swiss style and offers spacious rooms with most of them with mountain-view balcony. However, our room did not offer mountain-view balcony but window with equally beautiful view. We stayed in a smaller room perfect for couple in the main house besides the chalet. The room had elegant stone floors with underfloor heating, a seating area, a safe and a refrigerator. Our room had bathroom with a shower and with a hairdryer which was outside the room but still private. In fact we lived just below the owners – Gabi and Fritz.
There is storage available for bikes which also houses washing-machine for laundry service.
The chalet provides complimentary breakfast which is served in a small kitchen. The best part is that this kitchen is open for 24 hours serving tea and coffee. The owners provide both vegetarian and Gluten-free/lactose-free food items for breakfast. This is especially an important consideration for us since my wife is complete vegetarian (no fish or eggs as well). Also, some of the items served at breakfast are home-made. Gabi takes great pleasure in serving her home-made jam and marmalade with bread.
Gabi and Fritz are the best hosts we have ever met. They made us feel at home as soon as we reached Interlaken. Fritz had personally picked us from the railway station. Every morning, Fritz would provide small details to make sightseeing and exploring more efficient and fun. In fact, we are so glad he gave us suggestion to visit Schynige Platte Alpine Garden which we absolutely loved. Gabi took special care to ensure my wife has sufficient vegetarian options for breakfast. Fritz also provided good short-hiking suggestions which we explored and enjoyed every bit. Every evening, they would enquire about our day and made us feel comfortable. Gabi also gave parting gift when we left Wilderswil and of course Fritz dropped us at the station.
Chalet Gafri is labour of love created by two nicest human beings. Indeed, it is a place where guests become friends!
