Bright glass pebbles sparkle on the beach in brilliant hues of red, green, white, brown, pink and blue. In the early 1900`s, the city of Fort Bragg had several dump sites near the coastline and in the water itself. After years of using these dump sites, cleanup was initiated. Metal and other items were removed but all glass, pottery and other such material was left behind. Years of powerful wave action, salt water etc made such smooth round pebbles of the glass with a unique weathered appearance and texture, termed “sea glass”. Sea glass is precious and rare, not unlike gemstones. So much so that there is a sea glass museum close to the beach. Talk about turning garbage to glass and then some!
